MORFOBIOFISIOLOGIA DELLE PIANTE ERBACEE COLTIVATE E MORFOFISIOLOGIA DELL’ALBERO
Module MORFOFISIOLOGIA DELL’ALBERO

Academic Year 2023/2024 - Teacher: Elisabetta NICOLOSI

Expected Learning Outcomes

Knowledge of the tree structure with particular attention to the peculiarities that distinguish it from the herbaceous species;

Knowledge about the ontogenic cycle of the tree, exploring aspects related to propagation methods, the fruting cycle and fruit ripening;

Knowledge of the response of tree plants to soil and climatic conditions;

Knowledge of the genetic heritage of tree crops with particular reference to those typical of the Mediterranean environment. This information will be useful in order to set up innovative genetic improvement strategies useful for improving the quantity and quality of production, ensuring sustainable adaptation to climate change, also in terms of greater resistance and resilience to the risk represented by biotic and abiotic stress

Detailed Course Content

Morphology and physiology of tree plants: root system and epigeal organs. Endogenous and environmental signals that regulate the development of the tree. Tree ontogenic cycle. Development and fructification control: bud dormancy, vegetative cycle, fruiting cycle; Flower induction: sporogenesis, antesis, pollination, fertlization, sterility, allegation, senescence and abscission of fruit, maturation. Peculiar aspects of tree biology. Propagation and reproduction; recalls on the morphology and structure of the seeds: apomixis and polyembryony, juvenility, seed dormancy, germination. Multiplication: topophysis, cuttings, micropropagation, offshoot, grafting. Case studies about breeding approaches aimed at improving the traits of interest (production efficiency, product quality, resistance to biotic stress) in Mediterranean tree crops.
