ORGAN MORPHOLOGY AND MICROSCOPY AND ELEMENTS OF EMBRYOLOGYModule MORFOLOGIA E MICROSCOPIA D'ORGANO
Academic Year 2024/2025 - Teacher: VELIA MARIA D'AGATAExpected Learning Outcomes
The course will provide to students the necessary skills for a full comprehension of the structural complexity of the human body and the relationship occurring between morphology and function. The aim of the microscopic anatomy course is to provide the knowledge regarding the microscopic structure of organs and the skills to carry out the structural differential analysis between them. The course will also provide basic notions on regenerative medicine and in particular regarding tissue engineering.
Course Structure
Lectures and laboratory exercises.
If the teaching will be carried out remotely or in mixed way, it could be introduced changes always respecting previous statements outlined in the syllabus.
Required Prerequisites
Attendance of Lessons
Detailed Course Content
The lectures will provide notions of microscopic anatomy of the following organs:
- Heart and blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries)
- lymph nodes, lymphatic vessels, spleen, peyer plaques, thymus, bone marrow
- larynx, trachea, main bronchi and their branches, lungs, alveolus structure, pleura.
- pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver and pancreas.
- kidneys and excretory passages of urine.
- skin and skin appendages
- organization of nervous tissue
In addition, the course will provide basic notions on methods to organ processing for microscopic analysis. Some topics of regenerative medicine will also be discussed such as tissue engineering techniques
During the laboratory practice, students will assist to organs section preparation on slide and perform the differential analysis among them through optical or fluorescence microscopy analysis
