The Department of Biomedical and Biotechnological Sciences (Biometec) was founded in 2014 and is one of the Departments of the biomedical area at University of Catania. The Department provides a multidisciplinary network for biomedical research that is based in the following Sections: Anatomy and Histology, Biochemistry, Biology and Genetics, Microbiology, Pathology and Oncology, Pharmacology, Physiology.
The headquarter of the Department is located at the Biological Tower, Via Santa Sofia 97, Catania. Currently, the academic staff of the Department consists of about 80 members.
These are engaged in various teaching programs in Bachelor and Master degree courses in the field of Biology and Medicine, and conduct original scientific research in various biomedical areas. The Department hosts Bachelor and Master degree courses in Biotechnology, Motor Sciences, Physiotherapy, Orthoptics, and Employment Therapy. Furthermore, the International PhD Programs in Neuroscience, Basic and Applied Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology are also institutional programs of the Biometec, as well as the Residency Schools in Clinical Biochemistry, Medical Pharmacology, Medical Genetics, Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine, Microbiology and Virology, Pathology Clinic, Nutrition Sciences.
